Well mate, not my niche unfortunately (Sphinn-kicked me out-lol) otherwise I would be with you on this one all the way. Personally, I think it would be a goer and should attract plenty of interest. As far as the domain name goes, my pick (for what its worth) would be www.moneylisters.com. The reason being, it sounds more authoritative. I look forward to reading other comments and good luck with it Garry.

Thanks for the comment. It looks a little spammy to me. Immediately when I visited I got hit with a popup. From there, it appears to be a network with a broad range of topics. I am more less wanting to stay focused on a "Make Money Online" social network.

Garry thank you for your reply. Yuwie is able to pay their members because of their advertisers. They don't go overboard on pop-ups. The great part about it is all the page views. Currently I have over 400,000 page views for the month. People get paid to visit each other's pages. I have made some of the greatest friends in the world thanks to Yuwie. The fact that we get paid is like icing on a cake.

I'm sure something like that would get some ok traffic but not sure if it is "niche" enough to really stand out. It would also be a huge draw for spam and "fake" content/reviews and all that because of the referral commissions involved with the whole "make money online" world.
There would definitely be some valid news and articles/post that would fit nicely but unlike a digg there is definite direct methods to make money off referrals with every submitted post which would probably be a huge target for spammers.
But if that didn't overwhelm and annoy the regular users and people stuck around something like that could do well eventually.

Regarding the spam concerns, as the site would grow in popularity, I would seek out a few volunteers who would help me moderate the site. Also Pligg.com is very well supported in their wiki and forums and includes quite a few anti spam modules, one of which is a "report as spam" button as seen on Sphinn.com:
As particular as I am about things, I don't see how anything spammy will pass over my eyes with getting the boot. Also too, would it be safe to consider the voting system as well. If something does pass through my eyes, then it would be subjected to community vote. The "Devoting" option is available as well. Do you have any additional thoughts that you'd like to share based off my response back to you?

As far as "not niche enough" I meant the MMO niche may be too large...though I guess subcatagories could help with that. I just mean that there are so many variations of "make money online" that it can be hard to define. I guess after something got built and a regular flow started happening the site would help define itself.
But as far as "spam" that is the hard part with this niche. I do know that pligg has decent spam reporting and the voting system in itself is a sort of filter...not sure if you remember from the other pligg post you made but I have a celeb news pligg site: http://Celebits.com , so know the "power" behind it.
It's just that the whole "make money online" niche is pretty much all about getting traffic to your sales page. I can see plenty of good submissions...like maybe your recent adsense optimization post would be great, but I can also see every silly wannabe marketer on digitalpoint trying to constantly submit their post that are just filled with affiliate links.
Maybe I just get too annoyed browsing DP too often lol. But it seems like it would be a huge target for every spammer out there trying to sneak in their affiliate post.
I do think it would be a nice subject though. I just imagine it being overwhelmed with low quality content and people getting annoyed and not spending time on it. But I guess if there are enough moderators and regular members who are strict with their votes it could do well even if overwhelmed with spammers.

I would love to hear from this your experience, may be you make a post about it. Thinks I would like to know are: - hosting requirements, how much pageviews a day are you getting ? - which strategies did you adopted to let the world know about your network ? Is it already rolling ? Does it need a high time investment at the beginning and then it starts rolling on it's own ? Since how long are you running this network ? -Moderation: do you make a moderation/do you have moderators ? - Monetization: do people click on ads in a social network ? Are you willing to share some stats ? - Pligg: which features/plugins to use and which not ? - In general, Which errors to avoid ? - On what it is important to focus ? - Do you have experience with other networks ?
PS I'm using the adsense revenue share mod on mine and it works well for rewarding active submitters. They get the extra traffic to their blogs as well as another chance to earn revenue on the site itself. I've limited it to the extra active posters though.
Very cool. Alex in a comment above us was asking about this. I didn't know that there was a module specific for this. I am very well might consider using it. Well, I am to say that I am going to be totally glued to your Pligg site... I must have missed you mentioning this in the posts from last week or so.

Hi Garry,
on my holiday in the past two weeks I was thinking right about the two posts you mentioned above in your article and I came up with the same idea: I too noticed that there isn't a specific MMO social network. I didn't started to work on it because of lack of time.
In my opinion it has great potential and I'll give you all my support if you'll do it. I would like to learn from this experience as long as I've in mind some ideas for social networks in other niches.
IMHO the succes of every social network resides on how mature the partecipants of the network itself are, that means that if only people who submitts scammy posts or scammy productssite populate the network, the network itself will be of pure value. It's the old GIGO (Garbage In -> Garbage Out) concept.
I would be fairly strict on the quality of the content being submitted into this network. I too believe in GIGO. If I was to build this network it would uphold the highest level of quality. Perhaps I am not having an accurate vision on the amount of work needed to moderate a social network for the make money online niche community. I know that I am very strict on the comments that are allowed to be published here on my personal blog. Many people don't know this, but I get tons of comments that I don't publish. These are not the automatic ones that everyone gets as well. These are truly manually written comments that self promote affiliate links and things of that nature. So, indeed... how I run my own blog here is exactly how I would run the proposed social network. With that said, I too don't believe that it would be difficult to recruit a few of my close online friends to help moderate with me as well.

I don't visit the community having a revenue share; however, the moderators and upper level users would. Also too, I am unsure if I would use Google AdSense. I think I would be more interested in private advertisers. But I do know that Sphinn.com uses AdSense and indeed their ads look very appealing and in fact I have clicked on a few AdSense myself over there. All in all, I would totally be interested in rewarding my moderator team. End users would be rewarded with search engine friendly back links to their content as well as traffic generated from the site itself. Perhaps too, there could be a few perks here and there. But overall, I am sure you can vision what I see. ;)

I would say this is a venture best served if you already have a team of admins/moderators dedicated to monitoring else it would be a major time drain for you.
I agree with DD that the site would get spammed and attempts at gaming it unless it is proven to show constant oversight & moderation.
With that being said I like the MoneySmack domain.
PS - I see you went with the CommentLuv suggestion - I forgot to mention previously that they can be nofollowed.
Indeed there seems to be quite a bit of concern with monitoring overall quality of the content being submitted into the site. To me it is interesting that this is one of the primarily concerns because in all honestly that is one of the primary reasons why I want to create the network. I want to build a network that safe harbors nothing but superior quality because of how loose the make money online niche can be. I want to develop a community driven site that new comers can visit and feel secure and totally trust. I want people to come to this site for the first time and say, "wow... now this place is helpful!"
Controlling superior quality is one of the main reasons why I have a huge interest in creating this network. I would bring a lot of compassion and devotion to contributing my time towards assuring that this would be a place that mirrors what I vision in my mind. To me -- and again I must have a false perspective on the complexity and time invested -- I don't see it as being all that difficult to monitor. I would not allow direct submissions to landing pages that promote product. I would not allow submissions that purely point to affiliate links, etc... This would be a community where end users have the opportunity to submit their blog posts and web pages that provide superior and excellent quality content on tips, advice, tricks, lessons and tutorials on how to make money online.
If a user submits an article on how to make money online selling AdSense secrets and in the content that users directly links to the AdSense Secrets web page using their affiliate link within the post, I believe that would be fine. That user wrote a post that is helping others by sharing successful marketing methods for selling Joel Comm's eBook. He should indeed be rewarded and granted his submission into the network. Now, if that same user didn't put effort into writing a post and attempted to submit the URL that points to the AdSense Secrets page with his tracking ID in it, then that submission would get rejected and corrective action would be taken which could lead to termination of the end users account. Sign me up... I am ready to build this, I just want to know if I would have community support on this and if a large percent of my readers would volunteer some of their time towards submitting content into the site to help prime the pumps and get the traffic flowing.
CommentLuv is great. Thank you for suggesting it. In response to NOFOLLOW, I didn't do a thing. The plugin was installed, activated and came out of the box as NOFOLLOW. In fact, I don't see a front end way to change that. I do, however, see how I can modify that from the back end. Thanks again for your feedback and providing the comment.
I too favor MoneySmack.com. Reason being is because of the voting buttons I have in mind. Similar to the famous Google Smack... the SMACK button would be the DE-VOTE button. ;)

Garry this is a very cool idea. I truly belive more of a community needs to be fostered amongst us MMOer's , LOL I just had a name idea MOMO, or how about finn (its a synonym for five bux) Ha maybe i'll go check out some synonyms for moolah and see what I come up with. "pay it forawrd" is good hard to type though :-P In any event more of a community needs to be established and think having its own social network would be very cool. You're going to do folow all the links (Search engine suicidal but great !!!) Let me know if I can help in anyway !!
I don't see any harm in the links not being nofollow. I see that Sphinn.com actually does NOFOLLOW their links; however, places like Digg.com do not. I think the links would be very natural and organic and deserving of a backlink credit.

I love it man....as for the concerns...that's with any community driven site. I think if you get a few key people involved in helping your grow it, the site could be very cool. Then, you won't have to worry about submitting your own articles, because it would be encouraged.
I think you should do it, roll with the vision man....
The benefits that this social network is providing is definitely going to help us a lot.

Sounds like your thinking of creating a "slashdot" for the MMO niche. I have developed a social networking site before all of these frameworks were available and have to say that if it gets some serious traffic, you'll have to throw some serious money at it.
I think it would interest me because I'd like to read articles and peoples thoughts on programs and find out about new ones, but how much I'd use it would vary.

I would like to hear from the experience of anybody who already runs a network (like for example from Owen and Dot Driven), may be you make a blogpost out of it. Topics I would like to know are thinks like:
- hosting requirements, how many pageviews do you get ? - How long are you running the network ? - How do you got it to roll ? Which startegies you used to let the wolrd know about the network (and people submit articles) ? - Is there a point, after the initial time and energy investment, when the network starts rolling on it's own ? - Moderation: do you moderate or have moderators ? - System: which one (Pligg or other) do you use ? - Given your type of system, which features/plugins do you recommend to use and which not ? - Monetization: do people click on ads in a social network ? Which monetization strategies worked best ? - In general, which errors avoid ? - On which points it's important to focus ?

Great idea Garry! Out of the three domains you have listed, I think MoneySmack.com is best. But I think you might even be able to come up with something better. For some reason the one-word-extra-consonant convention seems to be popular. Something related to money, like blingg.com or something would be awesome!

Garry, Love the idea and I too would point out the obvious challenges that have already been listed by others: avoiding SPAM through strict content monitoring, etc. I think one way to slow it down on the front end is to make it a paid membership site. Doesn't have to be much money if you are worried about affordability but that would definitely take away a good chunk of crap that comes from spammy auto post stuff, like the idea of a gated community.
I would like to see quality product reviews so that people can really get a sense of some of the expensive stuff out there before buying them.
None of the names appeal to me - sorry. They are not clear enough to me that it's about online money making via internet marketing, as opposed to general money making or something unsavory. Of the three, if push came to shove, I'd pick MoneyEdition. But, with enough heavy lifting, just about any name would work if you get the popularity you need.

I think it would be a really great site if you get the spam factor taken care of as well as the regurgitation of the same ideas/posts that are already so common with the MMO niche.

Woah, id definatly check it out.
just keep in mind, its HARD to moderate the spam and stuff. Pligg comes straight "out of the box" as a digg clone, however, only 1 'digg clone' has really made it big. and thats Sphinn. I am actualy working on making my site into a 'bloggers portal' and not a digg clone, I Have actualy gotten afew programers to help me re-write afew of the pligg scripts, only half of my site is currently running on pligg the rest is running on a custom script.
anyways, i know you work hard on all your projects, and i know this will be a success, i'd use it, its a great idea - look how big the make money online niche is these days.
in regards to the name, i like the MoneyListers.com suggestion! MoneySmack sounds like your going to smack me =] haha

Moneylisters is cool.
I do own a pligg powered site but i use it to have my own link farm =) Members are active posting their articles, because I made it 1 vote and your article will be on a first page, soon i'll try to change that rule but for now members are happy in that way.

Social networking site needs users to make it work, so far im happy with my site.
My vote is MoneySmack. It has a ring to it that will gain traction I believe. I certainly believe it is a worthwhile venture if you can make it profitable for all of the time it will take to set-up and moderate, etc. If it is done right, I can see some of the heavy hitters getting the word out, but you would want to make sure the system is fair to newbies.

Considering that there are now so many social networks catering to such a wide range of niches, my biggest problem is finding ones relevant to me and related to my specific interests or product niches. Google seems to be inefficient and returns alot of irrelevant results. A good resource that I use to find them is this search engine for social networking sites.

I've never found much value in them. Now, I'll admit that that could partially be because I've never had/taken the time to fully understand how to use them.
I have, however, become interested in a new guy on the block called Web2Upgrade. That's partially because I like to see thing grow and develop.

I think it would interest me because I'd like to read articles and peoples thoughts on programs and find out about new ones, but how much I'd use it would vary.

- hosting requirements, how many pageviews do you get ?
- How long are you running the network ?
- How do you got it to roll ? Which startegies you used to let the wolrd know about the network (and people submit articles) ?
- Is there a point, after the initial time and energy investment, when the network starts rolling on it's own ?
- Moderation: do you moderate or have moderators ?
- System: which one (Pligg or other) do you use ?
- Given your type of system, which features/plugins do you recommend to use and which not ?
- Monetization: do people click on ads in a social network ? Which monetization strategies worked best ?
- In general, which errors avoid ?
- On which points it's important to focus ?

Love the idea and I too would point out the obvious challenges that have already been listed by others: avoiding SPAM through strict content monitoring, etc. I think one way to slow it down on the front end is to make it a paid membership site. Doesn't have to be much money if you are worried about affordability but that would definitely take away a good chunk of crap that comes from spammy auto post stuff, like the idea of a gated community.
I would like to see quality product reviews so that people can really get a sense of some of the expensive stuff out there before buying them.
None of the names appeal to me - sorry. They are not clear enough to me that it's about online money making via internet marketing, as opposed to general money making or something unsavory. Of the three, if push came to shove, I'd pick MoneyEdition. But, with enough heavy lifting, just about any name would work if you get the popularity you need.

I think it would be a really great site if you get the spam factor taken care of as well as the regurgitation of the same ideas/posts that are already so common with the MMO niche.
MoneyListers.com would be my pick for the domain.
Moneylisters.com is easy to remember.

just keep in mind, its HARD to moderate the spam and stuff. Pligg comes straight "out of the box" as a digg clone, however, only 1 'digg clone' has really made it big. and thats Sphinn. I am actualy working on making my site into a 'bloggers portal' and not a digg clone, I Have actualy gotten afew programers to help me re-write afew of the pligg scripts, only half of my site is currently running on pligg the rest is running on a custom script.
anyways, i know you work hard on all your projects, and i know this will be a success, i'd use it, its a great idea - look how big the make money online niche is these days.
in regards to the name, i like the MoneyListers.com suggestion! MoneySmack sounds like your going to smack me =] haha

Members are active posting their articles, because I made it 1 vote and your article will be on a first page, soon i'll try to change that rule but for now members are happy in that way.
